Officiating at the Utah Summer Games

WELCOME
Welcome to the new web site designed to make it easier to become and participate in the Utah Summer Games as an official. We hope that you will find this helpful in providing information and answers to you as an official.

ABOUT UTAH SUMMER GAMES BASKETBALL
The Utah Summer Games is entering it's 22nd year of providing an arena for athletes of Utah to exhibit their talents and abilities. The games are held in Southern Utah's Cedar City. Last year there were over 120 basketball teams that participated in the Utah Summer Games. These teams and players come in all different shapes and sizes from youth to masters. An estimated 350 games were played last year.

The week begins with the youth division being played on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The adults then move in and play Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The first two days of each division are round robin style and determine who advances to play in the medal games on Wednesday and Saturday of the games.

The Utah Summer Games has also implemented special rules to aid officials. We have a mercy rule to move along blow out games. We require all coaches to attend a rules and etiquette orientation to decrease the incident of unsportsmanlike behavior. The Utah Summer Games does not tolerate unsportsmanlike or profane language from players, coaches or fans. The Utah Summer Games also reserves the right to remove any player, coach or fan for any unsportsmanlike behavior exhibited during any aspect of the games.

WE STAND BY OUR OFFICIALS AND UPHOLD AND SUPPORT THIER DECISIONS.

USG BASKETBALL OFFICIALS
The USG prides itself in providing competent and quality officials for its basketball portion of the games. Therefore we treat our officials with respect and vie to provide them with the optimal experience. We provide unprecedented accommodations in order to bring good officials to the games and to have them return each year. Although we are not perfect we try to provide the best experience possible for you as an official.

WHAT DO WE OFFER

PAY
USG basketball officials are paid $20/game. Payment is received shortly after the games conclude with a check mailed out to the official.

HOUSING

The Utah Summer Games provides housing for officials traveling without their families. We accommodate officials in the recently constructed dorms on the campus of Southern Utah University. These dorms provide a central location for the officials and have private locking rooms with common areas including a full kitchen and shared bathrooms. Past officials have been impressed with these accommodations and after all it is free. Officials traveling with their family can contact Jeannine Davis at the USG office, (435) 865-8421, for assistance with hotels usually at a discount price.

MEALS
The Utah Summer Games also provides two meals each day. Officials are fed a box lunch which is brought to the site they are working and are also given meal vouchers to use at area restaurants. Drinks are also available at most locations.

PERKS
A t-shirt is given to each official that participates in the USG. Being at the Utah Summer Games also provides you with the opportunity to experience the area of Southern Utah and also to participate in or watch various other events at the Games.

OFFICIATING AT THE USG
We require that you have been or are currently certified to officiate high school basketball. It is also required that you wear officiating gear, striped shirt, black bottoms, shorts are okay, but pants are preferred and shirts MUST be tucked in.

We will work with your schedule to provide you with the right amount of games that you wish to do each day and on which day you wish to work. We cannot guarantee an amount of games but do our best to meet your requests. Officials are scheduled on a first come first serve basis. Those who commit early will get the games they request. We cannot guarantee quality or level of games. Most schedules are made with only times and not by level of teams. If you have worked the Games before we hope it has been a good experience and we are always open to suggestions to make it better.

If you would like to work as a crew, we will do my best to schedule you together for most of your games as this is easier to do. Most of our officials return each year and find it to be an enjoyable experience.
