To be closer to his family, the young one thousandth athlete switched gears from wrestling to participate in track and field along side his sister at this years Utah Summer Games.
Wesley Baker, 12, local cedar city resident and this years one thousandth registered athlete, has decided to leave the mats, and race in the 100 meter dash, and the long jump. Wesley has been a long time participant in the Utah Summer Games for nearly three years and has one numerous medals in wrestling.
Wesley decided to make the change from wrestling to track and field because his sister, Kelsey has won medals in the track and field events.
Wesley said when deciding to participate in track and field, "I'm pretty fast, why not? I love sports so I thought I'd do it."
Natalie Baker, Wesley's mother, also enjoys coming to the games. "We enjoy going out and competing. It's a thrill to watch our children run." Natalie also said, the Utah Summer Games "runs smoother every year... everything is right on the ball, and it adds to the enjoyment of everything at the Games."
Wesley prepares himself both mentally and physically for the games. Physically, he runs a mile everyday, and plays a variety of sports. To prepare himself mentally Wesley said he learned to play the guitar. Wesley said, "It keeps a tune in your head, to keep the screams of the crowd down, so I can stay focused."
Wesley's inspiration to help him in competing and in everyday life is his "awesome" fifth grade teacher, and his friend Cody tuft who "rocks" according to Wesley. Also, his Dad, Mother, and sister have been a big support to help Wesley compete in the Games.
The Utah Summer Games is a great family event. It provides a great atmosphere for youth to enjoy fun competition. Plus, in Wesley's own words, "It's enjoyable to do sports. To go out and do all kinds of sports keeps you in good shape to live longer and enjoy life!"
