Adam Powel's enthusiasm reflects the atmosphere the Utah Summer Games bring to families and friends gathering to enjoy the fun of competition. Powell, 23, of West Valley City, is the five-hundredth athlete registered for the Games.
Powell will be banking the ball of the walls and ceiling in Mens Doubles in the Racquetball competition. He'll be partnered with his father, Larry Powell, who first introduced him to the sport.
Powell said his love for racquetball came in eleventh grade when there was a fitness center built across the street from his home. His dad took him over to play, and ever since he has been hooked.
This will be Powell's third year participating in the Games. As a veteran to the event, he has already earned several medals and has set his sights on the ultimate goal; two gold medals, one for singles and one for doubles.
How does expect to achieve the feat?
"If I'm not working or sleeping, I'm playing racquetball," said Powell. "I just enjoy the game and love to play."
When asked about what sacrifices he has made to play in the Summer Games, he said there are none.
"Travel time off work; that's always nice, and I have friends in Cedar City. It's no sacrifice," he said.
Powell also said participating in the doubles racquetball event gives him an excuse to spend time with his dad.
"He was the one who taught me how to play racquetball. It's become a passion of mine, and it brings us closer together," Powell explained.
This year, Powell is taking multivitamins to help boost his energy level before he plays, hoping to give himself a better edge on the competition.
Powell said his favorite parts of the Summer Games are the competition, the friendships and the fun.
The Utah Summer Games is Utah's oldest and largest Olympic-style sports festival and takes place every June in Cedar City. The event offers over 50 different sports from which to choose, including Soccer, Swimming and of course Racquetball.
