Get Active Utah! Fitness Challenge set to begin on March 4
Wednesday, January 25, 2006
It’s time to dust off your hiking boots and dancing shoes and sign up for the 2006 Get Active Utah! Fitness Challenge.
Saturday, March 4, 2006 join the Check Your Health partners for a FREE kickoff event at the Olympic Oval in Kearns. The kickoff begins at Noon with a 1-mile skate or walk. Afterwards, join in the fun and sign up for one of the free physical activity clinics – perfect chance to learn speed skating, hockey, strength training or other activities. Utah residents of all ages are welcome to attend.
While you’re there, sign the family up for the Get Active Utah Fitness Challenge. Here’s how it works:
- Be Active! Make a special effort to be more physically active every day. Encourage your friends and family to do the same.
- Log your physical activity “miles” each day, week, or month at www.utahwalks.org. There you will find step-by-step instructions on how to log your miles, plus a conversion chart to help you turn your laps, steps, weight training, skiing or other activities into “miles.”
- Continue to be active. Regular exercise, like walking, is proven to help reduce heart disease, increase weight loss, lead to better mental health and ultimately, stronger communities.
Five ways to win:
- The individual, group, family and community that log the most miles will be presented with a Utah Summer Games Fitness Award in front of 15,000 people at the Utah Summer Games opening ceremonies on June 15, 2006.
- Utahns who reach the goal of 100 miles logged between March 4 and June 5, 2006 will receive a Get Active Utah! pin. It’s a goal that is doable for all fitness levels, and can be reached simply by walking during a few lunch hours every week.
- Utahns who reach the goal of 200 miles logged between March 4 and June 5, 2006 will receive a Get Active Utah! t-shirt.
- Friendly, goal-oriented competition between families, classrooms, schools, Troops, co-workers, offices or departments, communities, etc.
- Boy Scouts and Girls Scouts can earn a Get Active Utah Fitness patch by following set guidelines.
The Get Active Utah! Fitness challenge is part of an initiative to combat the growing problem of obesity in Utah and is brought to you by Check Your Health (Utah Department of Health, Intermountain Healthcare, KUTV2News Fresh Air) and the Utah Summer Games.
