Tuesday, June 14, 2005

CEDAR CITY – The Utah Summer Games, in partnership with KUTV Check Your Health adn Partners, will honor winners of the Get Active Utah! Fitness Challenge during the USG’s 20th-Anniversary Opening Ceremonies this Thursday night at Southern Utah University’s Eccles Coliseum.

Three Utah communities will receive awards as part of the presentation, including West Valley City, which garnered large city honors, while Cedar City and Price were named the top medium and small city award winners, respectively.

Roosevelt’s Wendy Busenbark will be honored as the top individual walker, while Heber Valley Elementary School in Heber City will be honored as the top school winner, and the SUU Education department will take home top group accolades.

The presentation will also feature special recognition for the Girl Scouts of Utah, whose 77 participants logged 17,215 miles – four times their goal of walking round trip from Salt Lake City to Savannah, GA, or 4,250 miles.

In all, 2,175 total participants signed up for the program, which included 609 100-mile walkers. As part of a statewide initiative to battle obesity, the Get Active Utah! Fitness Challenge encouraged participants of all ages and fitness levels to keep track of their physical activity and record those minutes or miles on the utahwalks.org website. Miles were tracked between January 1 and May 31, with a grand total of 2,062,633 miles logged in the five-month long program.
