Get Active Fitness Challenge Going Strong
Wednesday, March 9, 2005
The Utah Summer Games, the Check Your Health Partners (IHC, KUTV2 and Utah Department of Health) along Associated Foods and the Utah AARP as event sponsors, want to thank you for taking part in the “Get Active Utah!” fitness challenge. Our goal is to reach hundreds of Utahns resolving to make a lifestyle change and offer them an incentive to achieve their goal.
The Challenge appears to be a hit. Since December 29, 2004, over 1500 people – an average of about 25 people per day - have signed up to take the Challenge at www.utahwalks.org. Over 500,000 miles have been logged, and participants have requested over 500 Nutrition and Activity Trackers from Check Your Health. Recreation centers, senior centers, city employees and work sites along the Wasatch Front – and beyond – are encouraging their members and employees to take Get Active. Southern Utah University has signed up over 200 people alone.
One of the reasons the challenge is so popular is that it allows everyone to take part, no matter your age, fitness level or activity of choice. A 60-year-old ballroom dancer can easily compete with a 14-year-old snowboarder! And, the Challenge offers increased motivation for all those folks trying to keep their resolutions to eat healthy and get active in this New Year. If you and your organization haven’t signed up yet, it’s not too late.
Visit www.checkyourhealth.org or www.utahwalks.org today to learn how to get active and win a special award at the Utah Summer Games. You can also earn a Get Active Utah Fitness Challenge pin for logging the equivalent of 100 miles of physical activity before June 1, 2005. The Boy Scout or Girl Scout in your family can even earn a special badge for making the Challenge work for them and their community. But, the benefits don’t stop there. Regular physical activity is linked to emotional and mental well being, as well as helping to fight chronic diseases like diabetes, arthritis, high blood pressure and more.
We invite your organization to become involved and help us fight obesity in the following ways:
Talk about the challenge with your employees and clients.
- Place links to http://www.utahwalks.org/ on your website.
- Include descriptions of the Get Active Utah! Fitness Challenge in prominent places in your office.
- Create fitness events at your facility in which your employees and clients can gain physical activity “miles.”
We have printable materials available to help you spread the word!
The Get Active, Utah! Fitness Challenge began on January 1, 2005.
