Utah Jazz Center Borchardt to make appearance at Junior Jazz / Utah Summer Games Event

Friday, June 11, 2004

CEDAR CITY - The Cedar City Parks and Recreation Department along with the Utah Summer Games will welcome Utah Jazz center Curtis Borchardt to Southern Utah University’s Centrum Arena for an appearance Monday from 4:00-5:00 p.m.

The visit is part of the City’s Junior Jazz Program and comes on the opening day of the Utah Summer Games youth basketball competition. Borchardt will meet and greet the Junior Jazz and USG youth players, give instruction and answer questions during his appearance.

“We are excited to have Curtis come down here and visit the Junior Jazz players we have here is Cedar City,” Bob Tate, Parks and Recreation Director and USG Sports Director, said. “The timing could not be better with the start of the Utah Summer Games youth basketball competition beginning on Monday. We will have youth from across the state here and it will be a good opportunity for them to take part in this event as well.”

Borchardt played in 16 games for the Jazz this past season, averaging 3.6 points and 3.5 rebounds a game before a wrist injury forced him to miss the rest of the year.

Over 65,000 youth between the ages of eight and 18 participate in Jr. Jazz basketball, making it one of the largest youth sports programs in the world. Run through recreation departments in four different states, young players have the opportunity to learn basketball fundamentals and practice those skills as they play games against other youth in their league. Jr. Jazz players are also given the opportunity to attend a Jazz game in the Delta Center each season. The highlight for many youth is when a Jazz player makes a personal appearance at their recreation center. Jazz players run drills, answer questions, and leave a picture for each child in the program. Jr. Jazz sites outside a 50-mile radius from the Delta Center are provided with a player clinic during the summer months, when a player takes to the road and travels to outlying locations. Since 1984, the Jazz has made over 600 Jr. Jazz appearances throughout the Intermountain West.
