Salt Lake Torch Ceremony a Success

Over 150 elementary school children were in attendance as Governor Olene Walker encouraged all Utahans to “Raise the Bar” and strive to be better people.
The steps of the state capitol were the setting for the Utah Summer Games Torch Ceremony which officially kicked off this year's Games. Referring to the Olympic flame that burned in Salt Lake during the 2002 Winter Olympics, Governor Walked commented how the Utah Summer Games provided a similar venue for Utahans to strive to be their best.
After a few comments and with the help of three elementary school children, Governor Walker lit the traveling cauldron, which is a miniature replica of the Utah Summer Games Cauldron which awaits the flame in Eccles Coliseum in Cedar City.
“It was a real thrill to have Governor Walker kick-off this event,” said Kyle Case, Utah Summer Games Director. “I thought it was great the way she included the kids in lighting the cauldron. That had to be awesome for those kids.”
The Utah Summer Games flame will continue its journey across the state on June 5 in Logan 's Willow Park , where Mayor Doug Thompson is scheduled to present a special award of recognition and country group Roughstock is slated to perform. St. George will host the third Torch Ceremony where Mayor Daniel D. McArthur will also honor a local sports figure and musician Topp Hennessee will perform.
The Utah Summer Games, Utah 's oldest amateur sports festival, is celebrating its 19th year with over 40 sports to choose from including Inline Skating, Arm Wrestling and Shooting.
