On March 25, 2004, with a special ceremony in Ancient Olympia, the Olympic Torch began its journey around the globe. On June 1, 2004, on the steps of the capitol building, Governor Olene Walker will kick off the journey of the Utah Summer Games flame.

Tuesday, June 1, 2004 at 2:00 P.M. on the steps of the Capitol Building , the Utah Summer Games will host a special Torch Ceremony. Governor Walker will be present to share some comments and to light the flame that will travel the length of Utah before it ends up lighting the Utah Summer Games Cauldron in Cedar City on June 10 at the Opening Ceremonies.

“It's been a few years since the Utah Summer Games flame has traveled the state of Utah . We are incredibly excited to be reviving this wonderful tradition, and to have the Governor kick it all off is very fitting,” said Kyle Case, Utah Summer Games Director.

From Salt Lake City , the flame will travel to Logan for another Torch Ceremony at Willow Park on June 5, 2004 at 8:00 P.M. Mayor Doug Thompson is slated to be on hand for another Torch Ceremony where a special presentation is planned to be awarded to an individual who had made a lasting impact on athletics in Logan .

On June 9, 2004 St. George will host one last Torch Ceremony before the flame makes it way to Cedar City for the Opening Ceremonies.

“It's significant that the Summer Games flame will travel the length of the entire state. It symbolizes how the Games are for everyone from every corner of Utah . I feel that this is the beginning of a great tradition that will only continue to grow,” said Case.

The Utah Summer Games, Utah 's oldest amateur sports festival, is celebrating its 19th year with over 40 sports to choose from including Table Tennis, Track and Field and Swimming.
