Thursday, April 8, 2004
Kathy Sherwin and Marlon Shirley, the 2003 Male and Female Athletes of the Year were honored Friday night, April 2, 2004, at the Utah Summer Games Night with the Grizzlies at the E-Center.
Kathy Sherwin began her Mountain Bike racing career at age 27 with her first race at Deer Valley. An avid ski buff, she was looking for a non-winter activity to stay in shape. She entered as a beginner and won. She's been doing a lot of that lately, winning that is. Sherwin currently races professionally for Cannondale and participates in races around the country. The Heber City resident trains in her basement during the long Utah winters. This year she has already raced in Hurricane, St. George, Waco Texas and Fountain Hills Arizona with more races on the way. Sherwin is a shining example of determination, drive and the will to give your all.
People who say that man can't fly haven't seen Marlon Shirley run. This Nevada native, abandoned by his birth mother at age three, spent much of his early life bouncing from orphanage to foster care. At age five, Shirley was involved in a lawn mower accident and had to have his leg from just below the knee amputated. At the age of nine he found a home and a family in the Shirley's of Tremonton , Utah . Marlon became interested in Track and Field while attending high school. Since that time, Marlon has continued to break barriers and set records. In the 2003 Utah Summer Games Track and Field event, Shirley became the first and only amputee to break the 11 second barrier in the 100 meter sprint, posting a time of 10.97 seconds. Shirley has appeared on television and received many awards for his efforts both on and off the field including Role Model of the 21 st Century, US Olympic Spirit Award and an ESPY as the World's Best Disabled Athlete. He is also a 10 time World and Olympic Champion. For additional information on Shirley, visit www.mshirley.com.
